Spring Walleye Tactics
One might say there isn't a better time to catch walleyes than spring. Yeah, walleyes can be caught throughout the year, but the variety of catching options afforded during the spring months makes for something special, especially for those who love eater-sized fish. What's your favorite way to catch spring walleyes? Here are a few of our favorites:
Jig and Minnow: Fish is slow or fast...drag it, pitch it, reel it, you can alter your presentation to fit the conditions without having to change your rig. Jig and minnow (or plastic) presentations always have a chance of putting fish in the boat. Key is to always have a feel for where your jig is. Windy conditions can make jig fishing more challenging, just have to use a heavier jig. Best used for early morning, evenings, and when weather is calm.
Bouncer and harness: Whenever our dakota bouncers have a chance to come out of the box, it's going to be a great day. Dragging bouncers is an effective way to drift or troll for spring season eyes. Our custom leaders change with the season. In the spring, keep it very simple. Plain hook or just a soft green bead works best early on. Sometimes, a soft foam float can give just the right presentation to trick them also.
Slip Bobbers: Anyone who has chased spring walleyes knows they can be finicky! Slip bobbers give you the ability to present baits and hold them in a fishy zone for an extended period of time. You'll also be able to detect the most subtle bites, and give them time to eat before putting the hammer down. Rig these with egg sinkers and hooks, or small ballhead jigs for best results.
Pulling cranks: Long-lining crankbaits in the spring can be an effective way to cover water and catch those fish willing to bite. How you do it and what you use depends on your fishery.
Dead rigs: Don't mock it until you try it! Dead rigs were all we used back in the day to catch spring walleyes. Egg sinker and floater combo, crappie rig, lindy rigs...these presentations can be a very effective and relaxing way to catch some eyes.
